“A woman’s right to choose……”

The 1967 Abortion Act was the result of a campaign which initially began in 1936 to remove the barriers for working class women to having an abortion in Scotland, Wales & England. The Republic of Ireland voted in 2018 in a national referendum to legalise abortion, although restrictions remain in place in Northern Ireland.

The argument that women can have the right to choose in law never seems to be entirely won. Jeremy Hunt included reducing the abortion law in his recent Conservative leadership manifesto. Donald Trump’s presidential campaign promised pro-life judges; recently several US states have restricted women’s access to abortion and places the rights of the foetus above those of women.

What do we make of this as counsellors and psychotherapists?  What might be missed by having to keep winning the argument and defending the law?  You’re invited to come and discuss with other therapists.
