Assumptions, Privilege and Power 10 – 1pm
We are invited as therapists and citizens to participate in, even to have influence on, conversations and debates about the conditions in which we work and live, but are we able to critically examine the assumptions which underpin those discussions?
Dominance is maintained by those with privilege in the field controlling the narrative, reinforcing conscious and unconscious assumptions that keep them in power.
Our professional bodies BACP, UKCP and BPC (British Psychoanalytic Council), in their creation of SCoPEd have arrogated the power to define what therapy is: a concoction of ‘competencies’ and tiers of ‘expertise’. Unless we resist and develop the capacity for critical thinking about the roots and language of the narrative, we can find ourselves trapped in dialogues where assumptions are held in place by those to whom we have given power: government, professional bodies, our therapist/supervisor/trainer.
Come and join us in creating dialogues where such resistance and critical thinking can be supported and developed at PCSR’s Annual Gathering
Saturday 7th November 2020 10am – 1pm
PCSR member Karen Minikin, therapist and writer/activist https://www.baatn.org.uk/?s=karen+minikin will be opening the day with a 15 minute talk on systemic and institutional oppression and the value of critical thinking spaces.
You can read her article here on ‘Radical Relational Psychiatry: Towards a Democracy of Mind and People’
We will then divide into small groups for discussion.
PCSR member Peter Blundell, therapist, lecturer and campaigner www.peterblundell.com will give a 15 minute talk on assumptions, power and privilege in relation to SCoPEd.
Here’s a link to the SCoPEd debate hosted by Peter on 3rd August 2020 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wWXASFJGZI and you can find more info on the concerns regarding SCoPEd here

We’ll then into small groups again for discussion, and then come together as a whole group for the final part f the morning.
